Welcome to SmileSafe KidsTM, a new partnership between your child’s school, Lifetouch and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
SmileSafe Kids is provided at no cost through participating schools to help your family stay safer and respond quickly if your child is missing.
What is SmileSafe Kids?
SmileSafe Kids is designed to help you keep your child safer and respond quickly if he or she is missing.
Before explaining how we do this, it may help to know that some 2,000 kids are reported missing in the United States every day. That’s 800,000 missing kids every year. So it is understandable that child safety is a concern for many families.
Experts say the odds for a safe recovery improve significantly if a current portrait of the missing child is immediately available. This helps law enforcement take quick, coordinated and focused action – even in common cases like when a child becomes separated from parents or guardians in a public place.
Here’s how our SmileSafe Kids program helps:
-
We provide your family with two safety ID cards featuring your child’s portrait and other essential information

-
With your permission, if your child is missing, our 24/7 Rapid Response System can provide law enforcement with your child’s recent Lifetouch portrait to assist in search efforts
-
Through your school, we provide safety tips on a year-round basis
All this is provided free of charge in partnership with your child’s school and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and is administered with stringent safeguards to protect your family’s privacy.

The SmileSafe Kids ID Cards
Two safety ID cards are provided free of charge for each child photographed at participating schools.
As a parent or guardian, you should carry these in your wallet or purse at all times so they are available immediately if needed.
The cards accommodate key information about your child and include helpful tips and a toll-free hotline number.
SmileSafe Kids ID cards help authorities start an accurate, immediate, on-site search the moment a child is missing.

Our 24/7 Rapid Response System
If your child is missing, you can call the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s (NCMEC) toll-free hotline
1-800-THE-LOST for immediate assistance.
If you do not have a current portrait of your child, you can authorize us to electronically transmit your child’s Lifetouch portrait to NCMEC through a secure connection. Our service, free of charge, is available on a 24/7 basis.

Your permission and verification are required prior to portrait release as part of the SmileSafe Kids program’s key privacy safeguards.

How We Protect Your Privacy
Lifetouch and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) are committed to protecting your family’s privacy. We’ve implemented key privacy safeguards to ensure the integrity of the SmileSafe Kids program, including:
|
•
|
Your child’s portrait is not shared with NCMEC or any other party without your express request and written authorization. Your verification of portrait accuracy is also required prior to NCMEC’s public distribution. |
|
•
|
The ID number on the safety card is used only by Lifetouch to accurately locate your child’s portrait and does not contain any personal information about your child. |
|
•
|
Every request for a child’s portrait is verified by NCMEC with law enforcement to ensure the request is authentic. |
